FERAL KITTEN INCOMING!!!! We Got Ourselves 4 Black And White Babies And Their Beautiful – But Crosseyed – Mama! (632-636)

Our number one pro-trapper Donna got word that there were four babies and a mama hiding in a dirt alcove behind a junkyard and flew into action.

In just two days she got all of them and got them to our shelter!

The mama is very feral but amazingly her babies are all friendly and can be picked up and handled with no problem.

We are treating everyone for worms and fleas at this point and feeding them as much as they want.

We will reaccess the mama in the coming weeks but these babies are going to be ready for adoption as soon as they are old enough to be spayed and neutered.

Here are pictures of the family settling into their new digs...

INCOMING! Mama With Calico & Grey Kittens (Ferals # 629-631)

This adorable family was trapped in Riverhead.

The mama is very feral and her two kittens are plenty spicey!...

Lookit this grey girl protecting her sister and her mama!...

We have been handling the kittens as much as we can to try to get them accustomed to human touch...

We will try to see if the mama is a candidate for socialization after she relaxes for a day or two and realizes we are no threat to her or her family.

The grey girl seems to be coming along nicely... Just look at that face!...

*FERAL INCOMING!!!! 4 Girls And 2 Boys Just Got Dropped Off (# 623-628)

We got six new guests into the shelter yesterday and today, all in need of some food, relaxation, and vet visits.

All but two come from different locations.

These two sisters came in together and one of them is totally sweet and will absolutely be a candidate for adoption...

Her sister also seems sweet but a little stand-offish...

This poor girl is sooooo scared...

This one will take a day or two to figure out, but we have some good body language going on here...

The grey and white...

and the orange...

are the only boys and they can't wait to get outta here!!!!!

Updates to come 😻

FERAL INCOMING! We Got The Other 2 Cats Who Lost Their Caretaker (#621-622)

Smudge ----- & ----- Boots

In Mid March a woman who lived in an apartment complex and fed several feral cats passed away leaving them with no caretaker.

She was the only person they have ever had contact with and they are the only cats she ever had though they never came into her home.

We were able to trap BobChester (Yes, that's what happens when you can't decide to name a cat Bob or Chester) and get him into the shelter...

BobChester

But couldn't get the remaining cats... We didn't even know how many there were.

Well, there were 2 and we finally got them!

Their names are Boots and Smudge.

Here is Boots...

And here is Smudge...

We are presently evaluating them – and BobChester – to see if they can be socialized.

If they are too feral they can be taken back to their home as the woman's wonderful neighbors have stepped up and said they would continue to feed the mini-colony because that's what their neighbor would have wanted.

Updates to come!

Zeke Got His Fang Pulled And He's Woozy! (VIDEO)

Poor Zeke needed to get his front fang pulled today.

The veterinarian notice some decay in his front left canine and noticed that it was causing the big man some serious pain when he touched it.

That means every time Zeke ate the pain must have been terrible.

And being in a colony he only got dry food which must have been unbearable.

Now it is no longer a problem for the big boy!

While he is still loopy from the anesthesia he has no problem with his appetite as you can watch him chow down on some lightly watered down mushed up food or as we call it "pudding"...

FERAL INCOMING: Big Zeke Checks In! (#620)

Yes, Zeke has food on his nose but I'm not going to tell him... He was HUNGRY!

Zeke is an unexpected but very welcome guest here at AFAR.

He was... Well, you can't call it trapped... but more like made himself available for pick-up to one of our trappers as she was checking out a colony.

As she pulled up in her car Zeke casually walked up to her and sat next to her and basically said

"Alright, I'm ready, let's get out of here."

At that point, the trapper had no choice but to pick up Zeke, who is enormous, and lug him into the car.

And so Zeke is now settled in for a few days here for some rest and relaxation while we get him an appointment with the vet to make sure he is healthy and ready for adoption.

He has a few scars on his back that looks like he had been bitten by a larger predator but they are healing up nicely.

That was perhaps the catalyst that made Zeke say I think I'd better get indoors sooner than later.

We are only too happy to help him because he is a sweet, cuddly, big moosh who deserves a forever home after what looks to be a couple of rough years outside.

Here are a few more pictures of Zeke...

Check back soon for adoption info!

FERAL INCOMING: Colony Of Feral Cats Lose The Only Caretaker They Have Ever Known (#619)

Here’s one of those stories you never really get used to when you run a shelter and it has happened a few times believe it or not.

This poor man belongs to a colony that was fed exclusively by an elderly woman who had them all spayed and neutered and did all the right things when you are dealing with ferals.

She is the only person they have ever had contact with and they are the only cats she ever had though they never came into her home.

The heartbreaking problem now is that the woman has passed away.

There is no one to take care of her colony and they are all completely wild, untamed, and impossible to catch as they only knew the woman who cared for them their whole lives.

This is the only one we have been able to trap so far after we were alerted to the situation.

Yet after the trapping is completed the next part is even harder as they can’t be placed in a home as they are all 100 percent feral and terrified of everyone but the woman that took care of them.

So we are in the process of not only trying to catch the remaining members of the colony but then trying to figure out if we should relocate them to an existing colony, try to find homes with patient families, or release them back to their original spot and try to find a caretaker for them.

Updates to come.
