FERAL INCOMING: Bonus Cat From The Group Home! (#616)

After we took in the 8 cats and kittens from the group home two weeks ago we were pretty sure that was it for that particular property... but were happily mistaken.

With all of the cats still here in various stages of recuperation from their vet visits, deworming, and defleaing treatments we got another call from the home informing us there was yet another cat there apparently wondering where the heck everyone went!

We went over and it was an easy trap for all involved as he is a sweetheart and we literally just picked him up and chauffered him over to our shelter.

He is no longer in a cage as we transferred him into the "friendly room" where we have three other cats from that colony we are trying to socialize for adoption.

He's a GOOD boy!!!!!!

If we can adopt 4 out of the 9 it will be a good day as the others will go back to a nice situation where they are fed regularly and looked after by the home's residents.

In addition, we have set up a couple of insulated cat houses to help keep the remaining crew warm through the Winter.

FERAL INCOMING!!! Abandoned Emaciated Cat Trapped At Condo Complex (Feral 615)

On Friday night one of our trappers captured this poor male longhair at a condo complex in Wading River.

He is nothing but skin and bones and matted hair...

Despite the horrific shape he is not feral and proceeded to collapse into a heap of purring once he was inside and warm and being pet.

We knew why when we learned that the complex is mostly for older, retired people as we have seen this before.

It happens when elderly people adopt a cat and then pass away without any plans for the care of their companion.

Their relatives come and sell their homes and don't want to be bothered with having to place a pet or even just dropping them off at the local shelter.

So they abandon them.

This is the result.

As he was fed regularly and probably brushed or had his hair trimmed he never had to hunt for food or groom himself.

Out in the wild, he starved and his coat became a solid, painful mat.

We immediately shaved all off his tangled fur and got him into some warm blankets with as much food as he could eat...

All he has to do is rest now and we will find him another forever home... He has been through enough losing his human and then being abandoned.

FERAL KITTEN INCOMING!!! Woah! 8 Cats Just Came In Before The Snowstorm! (Ferals 607-614)

We just got inundated with cats and kittens and not a moment too soon because we just got buried under half a foot of snow!

These babies came from behind a group home for the mentally challenged where we had trapped, spayed, and neutered a colony a while back.

After we had finished we left our contact number with all the boarders in case anything happened.

Well, to make a long story short, one of the house members called and let us know that someone had dumped a group of kittens in the existing colony.

The problem is that they didn't tell us for a month because they liked watching the kittens run around the backyard.

As a result, the once tame kittens are now all feral.

It is a shame because they are gorgeous and would have made wonderful companions for someone if we had only known a few weeks earlier.

We will try to see if any are able to be socialized but as you can see from the pictures they are not too happy.

That being said, fingers crossed.

Here are the kittens and an unneutered adult male we were able to trap as well...

We will post updates on these beauties in the next few days as there is a cold snap coming mid-week and we will be keeping them until that is over.

ADOPTION ALERT! Gypsy Queen Has Found Her Forever Home!

We have a New Year's adoption!

On Saturday a wonderful family came to our shelter after seeing Gyspy Queen on our Petfinder page to spend some time with her to see if they would be a fit.

After a few minutes in the visiting room, they came out and said "We're in love!" and wanted to adopt Gypsy on the spot.

And so we put the sweet girl in a carrier and off they went.

We have received about 10 text messages and pictures from the family saying they were totally smitten with Gypsy and they couldn't be happier.

Imagine, in the space of just over a month, Gypsy Queen went from eating garbage and handouts behind the town's outlet mall to having a loving forever family of her very own.

She's even allowed on the bed and has her very own stuffed animal already...

Nothing better than a good adoption and a happy ending!

FERAL KITTEN INCOMING! Sandra And Nikkita (Ferals 605-606)

We have totally fallen in love with these two girls over the last week they have been with us. Sandra and Nikita are both huge personalities but also totally different.

Sandra, the grey stripped girl, is a sweet, soft, relaxed personality who will out of nowhere let loose a 10-second single note meow that stops everything. It is like she is singing!

Sandra also loves to be pet and will lay on her back for belly rubs as long as we can dish them out!

Nikkita, the black kitten, is a ball of nonstop movement who at a moment's notice will leap into the air and then jet across the room and back while juggling a cat toy. It's quite a sight.

She is also equally as snuggly when the mood strikes her, which is often, and she doles out serious kisses!

As they both came in pettable, handleable, and with great temperaments so I have a feeling these two will have no problem being adopted.

Here are some pictures of the two as they have adjusted to their surroundings...

FERAL KITTEN INCOMING! Elvira – Meowstress Of The Night! (Feral # 604)

Hey everyone! Things are surprisingly busy here at AFAR for being so deep into Winter.

Usually, when it gets cold we only get a few TNR (trap, neuter, release) cases but so far there has been a surprising influx of kittens.

Today it is Elvira the Meowstress of the night... She isn't spooky though she is adorable!

When she came in it was apparent that she was tame and handleable so much that we could pet her and even pick her up.

She is demure but for some reason sits like a bulldog.

While she has been here Elvira has also displayed her unique love of putting her head under the faucet when we are washing cat bowls and just letting the water run until her noggin is soaked.

I think she does it because she loves to have her head toweled dry.

She's silly!

Updates to come!

FERAL CAT INCOMING! Big Mama Scarlett! (Feral # 603)

Hey everyone, here is Scarlett. She is a beautiful calico short hair who came into AFAR with her four kittens.

She did a wonderful job nursing them and raising them being that she was little more than a kitten herself.

Her kittens were so sweet and wonderful that all got adopted immediately.

But no one has adopted Scarlett.

Don't get me wrong, we love having her around but she has so much love to give and silliness to share as we all know calicos are goofy!

If you are in the area and are interested in Scarlett you can go to her page on Petfinder and fill out an application. You won't regret it!

Click HERE to go to Scarlett's page.

Here are some extra pictures so you can get a feel for what her personality is like...

Scarlett also has a grade A+ gas face! ðŸ˜¹
